We had the good fortune of connecting with Miles Brown and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Miles, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Starting my own business wasn’t an easy choice for me. There were a few things in my way. 1. I had never started my own anything before
2. Doing my business meant I wouldn’t be focused on my dad’s business.
3. I was starting something I felt called to, but I did not know the industry AT ALL.
These things made me not want to do my own business. Made it easy to want to stay in my position. When you start a business everything that does or does not happen, is because of you. And that can be a lot of pressure. But eventually I realized I did have my own goals, I had my own passions, and there was no way for me to reach them without starting my own business. So now that’s what I’m doing and it is a fun ride!
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My business is a consultant/speaker/coaching business. So I teach people how to speak in front of groups of people and I am an entry way to them getting paid to speak and tell their life’s stories, experiences, and expertise. I truly wish I knew sooner that you could get paid to talk about the info that is already in your head. And of course I am a speaker as well as a trainer, I started speaking and training on the topic of complacency. I wish I knew how bad and dangerous it was years who. What sets me apart is the heart and soul of my business. The purpose of the business is not actually to make money, even though we are very much so a for profit company. The center and driving force of the business is to “DO SOMETHING GOOD” and to help everyone we speak with to be able to do the same. So I give as much as I can. Paying bills, giving money away, paying more bills, LoL, these are the kinds of things my business does. I might give $1,000 away at my next speaking event. And really that is what I am most proud of. I am proud to go on social media and pay a light bill for a follower or to send a VISA gift card. As far as what excites me, the future. I am working on growing my business, helping more people, so that I can reach my real goal. I’ve learned that selfishness creates the world we hate, but when we are intentional about doing good, we can create the world we love. So as my business grows, my ultimate goal is to pay off mortgages for people. I want to do that for multiple people/families every year. It took me investing thousands of dollars in my craft, in mentorship programs, in myself, to get to where I am now. And that wasn’t easy, I had to find money I did not have, I had to encourage folks when I personally felt blue, and I had to help when it hurt. I had to fight through self doubt, learn about how complacent I was and how to overcome it, I had to learn to do what I didn’t like to do. All of that brought me to where I am now. But for my ultimate goal. I don’t know what it will take to accomplish it but I am EXCITED! For me to be able to freely give hundreds of thousands of dollars away, maybe even millions, I do not know what I will have to learn, who I will have to become, what I will need to invest, to grow to that stage, but I am excited for the journey. What I want people to know about my brand and my story is that I came from humble beginnings, and I worked towards what I wanted. What I wanted was to give a lot, so by me fighting for that, I had no choice but to get a lot. All that we want can be had in us finding how to help someone else. Afterall that is how business is done anyways right, you find a solution for someone, and they paid you for it. So even in business DO SOMETHING GOOD.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my guy Kyle flew in from California to visit me, we would have a great time! We are going all throughout the DFW. This is Texas, so good food is never too far. But I’ll probably go to Legacy Hall for some grub. Visit all the pro sports teams, Mavs, Cowboys, Rangers, and Stars. Grab some friends and do the electric bike tour through Dallas. Show him the houses I’ve lived in since my move to Texas. Gotta go to the comedy clubs, what is better than laughter, attend a taping of Black Men Due Talk podcast, maybe some battle rap, find live music, enjoy Sidecar Social, Then we’d probably make music at my house. Somewhere in all of that I’d probably have to do some work and I think it is cool when people get to see me do what I do on stages and behind the scenes.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to shoutout my dad, Kelvin Brown, Pastor of Word Impact Center and CEO of Streams Financial LLC. He is the reason I have any financial knowledge. He forced us to learn and that enables me to try new things and experience new levels of success. Shoutout to my granny for always telling me that I need to use my voice. I didn’t always know how, but I’m using my voice now and helping others do the same! Shoutout to all the people that told me how good I was on a stage in one way or another, who encouraged me, who paid me for a service, who brought me in to speak to their group, and to all who loved me. Most of all, shout out to the Lord God almighty, who created all that is good and who forgives all of our wrongs.
