We had the good fortune of connecting with Christy Harris and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Christy, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Great skincare shouldn’t be complicated. I got tired of using a bunch of different products, that were all supposed to solve common skin issues, but as my skin sensitivities became more prevalent, more irritation occurred with the products that were supposed to help! As time went on, I decided to just try basic, natural products on my skin, which helped to ease the skin sensitivities and irritation, that I would experience.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
What sets B.O.S.S. Essentials out from others, is that with a simple name, comes simple solutions for healthy skin, “Butters, Oils, Soaps, Scrubs.” We cut out all of the fluff and fillers that are common in other brands, and try to stick to the basics in solving issues of dryness and skin sensitivities. Although we currently do use below the minimum amount of phthalate free, skin safe, fragrance in our products, we are considering transitioning to only essential oil scented products in the near future.
The road to B.O.S.S. Essentials has not been easy! In fact, I am a mother of 3 and a second year law student, so finding balance was challenging. However, I have a vision, and no matter the challenges I face, my vision is what keeps me going in my business. I can’t see anything else, but the finish line.
I’ve learned more than my fair share of lessons in business! A few key things that I have learned, while managing my business in law school, is that planning and time management are key. Even though I love B.O.S.S. Essentials, my top priorities are my children and law school. So with those two being in the forefront, I have to make sure I am strict with my time and organized, in creating product. There is literally no time to slip up. Next, I’ve learned to not overthink in terms of my products. My friends can tell you that I have rebranded and reformulated so many times! I realized that in doing that, I was wasting my time and actually fearful in taking on the idea of actually being successful. I’ve never been scared to take risks, but I was scared to follow through.
As I’ve grown, I’ve learned to not doubt myself, and simply put, I know my products are top tier. I’m rooting for everyone, but I can only see the goal that I have for me and my children.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I am such an introvert, but if I were to show a friend a great time for the day, we would first go hiking at the Cedar Ridge Preserve in Dallas. Then, we would head over to Phat Girls BBQ in Cedar Hill and lastly, we would end the night with music and dancing at The Freeman.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My mentors Chris & Dominique Howell and all of my family and friends who have supported me throughout all of my ventures in the different phases of my life. When it was hard to see my “why,” they were always there to help guide me in my quest for the answer.
