We had the good fortune of connecting with Kendall Gary and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kendall, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
I used to think that I balanced things well but now… not so much. I focus too much on things that don’t make me happy per se but are necessary. I know that sounds silly but it’s true. I noticed that Instead of focusing on music, I put way too much time in school and pressure on myself to make the best grades instead of soaking up that time and taking risks with my music. Do I have some regrets not doing that? Yes, but I truly believe that everything happens for a reason and the path I am on is where I am meant to be. I have definitely put my work before my music lately. Being able to be creative is what makes me happy! If I did not have some sort of creative outlet in my life, I honestly don’t know what I would do. I need to work on finding that balance between work, my small business, music and life. It’s tough! But I try to be gracious with myself and remind myself that it takes time and I will get there. I recently went to LA to record some new music though… so I am excited to share that.

Please tell us more about your art. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
I’m always myself and I feel like so many people try to be someone they aren’t. With social media, it’s so easy to put on this persona. I know a handful of artists who have started their careers as someone they aren’t really and they forever have to be that. I don’t believe in being someone just for people to like me—especially on social media. I’d say I’m proud of that and my music. I started doing music at a young age and have learned and grown so much over the years. It definitely was not easy and still is not easy. I remember when I was in school people used to make fun of me for pursuing a dream. I did my best to ignore them and continued to do what I loved.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I am a home body through and through! But, if I had to, I would probably take them to Grandscape in The Colony. That area has so much to do and they always have events and concerts going on.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Oh my goodness! How many people can I name?! I have so many people to give shoutouts to for helping me with my career. From the women who help put me together for photo/video shoots, to the men that helped me create my music, to the people who raised me to pursue my passion of music. It takes a village!

Tiffany Forsberg, Janet Herrera, Tiffany Hatfield, and Chantel Gyasi are my glam squad! They are the ladies who have showed up and made my visions of hair, makeup and clothes come to life for all of my shoots.

Jeremy Brookover has done all my videos! I honestly do not know what I would do without him and his crazy, talented self! He is always willing to fly in and make my projects. He listens to my videos and ALWAYS makes it better than I could have every imagined. Cryste DeSheilds has not been in my life long but I feel like I have known her for forever. She has photographed me for magazines and my album covers. She is the sweetest person and have a good eye!

The guys who were the official members of Team Kendall: Jason “JG” Gilbert, Tommy Hubbard and Rich Zahniser. These guys are responsible for making the music I have out—and some that I still need to release—happen! If it weren’t for them, well I honestly don’t know! They helped me grow as an artist and I am forever grateful.

A team that I owe my branding and online creative presence to is the Infinite Reach duo: Savannah Peer and Dillon Rose. These two have helped in so many ways. Savannah is such a creative person. We clicked immediately upon meeting each other and a beautiful friendship has come from it! She is one of the most creative people I have ever met. I really enjoy working with her and seeing all the amazing ideas she comes up with. She is responsible for all of my cover art!

Another woman I am grateful for is Brianna Ruelas. I met her through Tiffany Forsberg. After talking to Tiffany about feeling creatively stuck since my grandmother died, she connected me with Brianna. This woman y’all… This woman!!! She lit a fire under my booty and reminded me why music was so important. She helped me get out of my rut by connecting me with another songwriter, Savannah Brister, to help me finish this song I was writing about my grandmother. It was meant to be that these two women came into my life at the time they did!

Lastly, my parents. Is this too cliché? Nah. My parents told me, and still tell me, to pursue music. They have never told me it was silly or that I might not amount to anything when other people and other parents/adults were telling them that and questioning why they were “allowing” me to chase a silly dream. My parents are my biggest supporters and without them in my corner cheering me on and pushing me, I wouldn’t be where I am today.
