We had the good fortune of connecting with Jelly Cocanougher and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jelly, is there a quote or affirmation that’s meaningful to you?
“On earth there is no heaven, but there are pieces of it.” – Jules Renard
Art and nature will be forever intertwined, inspired from the complexity of the natural world. They feed into each other and continuously evolve. An infinite source, guiding exploration of color, texture and even movement to those who are the interpreters. You might look at the same species of butterfly, but each one will be slightly different and unique in its own way – there is infinite inspiration. That is powerful when creating.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I was raised on a generational cattle ranch, fully immersed in awe-inspiring beauty. The core of my love for art is a deep-rooted longing to appreciate, understand, and celebrate the mastery of nature.
Contrary to widespread belief, cowboys are still very much existing in the United States, which has made me committed to documenting this unique way of life. I’ve had the chance to visit some of the eldest ranches and follow these cowboys as they perform. I’m honored to capture the dedication of cowboys continuing the traditions of generations past. Through my art, I aim to pay tribute to the eternal legacy of the American cowboy and increase awareness of their existence in today’s contemporary world.
One of the triumphs I am most grateful of is being able to institute myself professionally as a multidisciplinary artist, crossing the realms of design, photography, and traditional art. This has permitted me to discover diverse opportunities of creativity, endlessly pushing the limitations of my creative illustration. By expanding my abilities, I have been able to extend to a fuller audience and connect with individuals who also share a passion for the western lifestyle and the corresponding profound beauty of nature.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We would go to Northside and goof off in the area visiting friends. Shop at Maverick Fine Western Wear, Leddy’s, Proper Supply Co, and see if any of those stores are having a trunk show. Some of our favorite restaurants to hit up are Fred’s Texas Cafe, Lonesome Dove or Rodeo Goat. If we were to go to the bars we’d visit Cadillac and White Elephant and hang out! Hopefully there’s a rodeo in town or some other fun event!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
To the creators that came before us.
