We had the good fortune of connecting with Kristin Newman and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kristin, what do you attribute your success to?
Our success truly lies in the people of our league: our players, volunteers, and board members. They are the ones that allow us to offer such a unique experience. The saying “it takes a village” is very much the success behind our league. Our league’s women make us successful because they understand that we are different than most kickball, or other sports, leagues around. We started this league with the specific mindset of bringing a group of women together with different backgrounds to play kickball without having to worry about whether we were fast, strong, or generally athletic enough to play. We have moms and daughters, sisters, neighbors, Facebook friends, etc. We have nurses, teachers, hair dressers, lawyers, real estate agents, administrative staff, stay at home moms, etc. The point is all women are welcome in our league and our board works tirelessly to ensure that our players and volunteers feel that way. The camaraderie and respect for each other built on the field and between the teams makes us one team, one sisterhood, one village.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am the President of Northeast Tarrant Women’s Kickball Association. We are a kickball league for women 18 years old and over. While we are working on offering a regular co-ed league option, our foundation is our women’s league with an annual co-ed tournament.
We are unique from other kickball leagues in the area, and most of the United States, because we focus on our women. We focus on empowering women to feel strong, capable, and welcome. We understand that women have kids, family, and job obligations so we stay cognizant of those when making plans for the league. Additionally, we’ve finally reached a point where we can start giving back so we try to support other nonprofits in our area.
While I have much more planned for the league, I am so proud of how far we have come over the years and the league we’ve become. We’ve definitely had our challenges to overcome along the way from which I have learned a lot. For example, there is always going to be those who try to discourage you or sow negative seeds, but I have had to learn to rise above that. I read that it is not about being motivated in the face of discouragement; rather, it’s about being determined and consistent in your goals. That is really what I try to put forth for our league.
I want the world to know that we are truly a league with the goal to empower women. I’m most excited about growing that league and empowerment.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My mom, Robin Newman, gets all the credit here. She started this league nearly 20 years ago and has been the one constant guide for the league and me. Her dedication to women’s kickball has been nothing short of awe-inspiring. She has given me the same drive to lead our league into the next chapters of our story.
