We had the good fortune of connecting with Aubry Mayfield Lauryl Pingel and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Aubry Mayfield, every day, we about how much execution matters, but we think ideas matter as well. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
We both went to college together to become teachers, so we taught elementary for 6 years. During our 5th year of teaching, we went to dinner to catch up. While we were chatting about what was going on in our lives, we ended up talking about how we had organized some spaces in our own homes. This snowballed into us coming up with the idea to start a professional organizing business. Since we had lived together multiple times throughout college, we both knew how organized the other was. We had both followed a few other professional organizing companies and realized it was something we could create on our own as well. So on that evening, we started brainstorming business names and later came up with Stay Golden Organizing because we have Goldendoodles and Golden Retrievers. We want our business to stand out from others, so our goal is always to create a space that looks well thought out, streamlined, and cohesive. In order to do so, we plan every space out and order organizing products custom to our clients’ homes.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
We started our professional organizing business in June of 2020 while we were full-time teachers. When we started our business, we thought it would be a fun side gig to do alongside teaching or during our summer breaks. Little did we know, we stayed so busy during the 2020-2021 school year that we had to choose one career path or the other. We didn’t want to give up our business so we decided to quit teaching and take Stay Golden Organizing full-time. That first year of business was our most challenging year since we were learning how to run and grow a small business while also striving to be good teachers. Thankfully, we had each other to lean on and didn’t give up. We talk all the time about how we wouldn’t be able to work this business successfully on our own, especially during that first year. Many people ask us how we knew how to start a professional organizing business. Our biggest lessons we’ve learned is to ask questions to people you know that own a small business and Google can become your best friend! We’ve learned so much along the way and are still continuing to learn the best ways to run our business. These three years in business have changed our lives and we’ve really loved getting to be apart of the small business community in Tulsa.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
There are so many great places in Tulsa to visit, so this is hard! Some of our favorite food places we would take someone to would be Bramble for brunch, Bohemian Pizza or Mother Road Market for lunch, and Roosevelt’s for dinner. Mother Road is a really cool food court that has tons of options to pick from! Tulsa also has so many coffee shops to pick from, so we’d have to take someone visiting to a few of those. Laurannea and Antoinette Baking Co. both have great coffee and yummy treats to pair with your drink. We also love OKCookieMomster and Rose Rock Micocreamery for some delicious cookies and ice cream! Some fun activities that would have to be on the itinerary are going to the Philbrook Museum, hiking at Turkey Mountain, and walking around at The Gathering Place which is also a must if you have kids. Our favorite areas of town are Cherry Street, Brookside, anywhere in Downtown Tulsa and Downtown Broken Arrow!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
We’ve had a lot of support along the way to get us where we are today with our business. When we first started our business, we looked up to The Home Edit to learn from. We admired their work and really respected what they were doing. So we have to give a huge shoutout to them, but we also wouldn’t have made it this far without the support of our significant others and our families.
