Meet Jenny Ozmun | Owner & Baker of The Chaotic Crumb

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jenny Ozmun and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jenny, every day, we about how much execution matters, but we think ideas matter as well. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
I honestly call myself an accidental entrepreneur. Prior to being a ‘caker’ I was an elementary music teacher for 15 years. I had just left the profession to start a piano studio in my home…. And then Covid hit. I was at home with my three young children while many of my teacher friends were learning how to teach virtually while juggling their children and the other issues Covid brought with it. A few friends asked me if I could help out with birthday cakes for their children. I soon discovered I really enjoyed baking and decorating cakes! With a nudge from my friends and family I started The Chaotic Crumb.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
As an entrepreneur I have found that sometimes I feel like I have no idea what I’m doing! In some ways I stumbled into the deep end and am learning as I go. What I do know is that cake has become my love language. That I treasure being trusted to create a delicious and beautiful part of people’s celebrations. I’m really proud of the cakes and cupcakes I make and really proud for putting myself out there. It has not been an easy road- from recipe fails, cake fails, ice-pocalypse, inflation, supply chain issues… and the list goes on. I have truly learned a lot.
Two important lessons that I’ve learned are:
1) I don’t know what I’m capable of unless I try. If I’m not sure of how to do something I do a lot of research and then go for it! I look to other professionals to learn and grow from their knowledge and experience.
2) Not all business decisions feel good. I used to feel like cake is a happy thing so this should always feel good- but unfortunately business isn’t always rainbows and cute kitty videos! Sometimes business choices or having to say ‘no’ makes me feel like a meanie. But at the end of the day I know I’ve done the best I can and continue to show up.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My family and friends have been the driving force behind my success. Their willingness to sample recipes, help wash dishes, place orders, help with deliveries, and provide business advice has been priceless and so very appreciated.
