We had the good fortune of connecting with Holly Brown and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Holly, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Risks are scary, but they’re important. This whole thing with Quid Facis was built on a risk, albeit a relatively safe one. I quit a job that was bringing me more grief than fulfillment without having something to jump to next, which felt like a pretty big risk. I’m lucky in that my husband makes enough and we had saved enough to be comfortable with the risk of having a single income while I experimented with my next move. Without any risk, nothing ever happens and our lives run the risk of stagnating, but it’s also important to measure the risk and be sure that it’s worth it, whether it works out how you hope or not.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
To be honest, I’m still figuring that out, but it’s that searching that’s part of my “whole thing.” I started Quid Facis a little over year ago and it literally means, “What are you doing?” because that’s the question I was asking myself as I quit one job without a clear plan ahead of me. I have dabbled with writing here and there in the past, a little with the school newspaper in college, a book review for the small town paper now and then, but I felt out of practice and Quid Facis was a way for me to explore what I wanted to write while dusting off those skills that had been put in storage for a little while.

It hasn’t been easy, but it’s been a learning process and I enjoy a challenge. Making yourself heard and seen in such a vast crowd as the internet is a challenge I’m still working with. But it’s worth it, if I can connect with someone through my writing, either by making them laugh or think or just feel like they’re not the only person who feels a certain way or has had a certain experience.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m really not all that familiar with the area, I think you found me because I wrote about the Admirals lounges at the DFW airport. And those were certainly worth checking out, but maybe not for a whole week! But getting out and exploring a city is always great fun, and always check out what’s local: local entertainment, local restaurants, local bookstores and boutiques! And ask the people in those places for their recommendations. You can turn an unplanned weekend (or week!) into a great scavenger hunt adventure that way.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Jenny Lawson, The Bloggess, is definitely an inspiration. I love her style of writing and how she is so adept at making me both laugh and cry. I don’t think I’ll ever have the reach that she has, but I think she has some more important things to say anyway.
