We had the good fortune of connecting with Monique Segovia and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Monique, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
i’ve always wanted to start my own business. I went to college and got my bachelors in marketing, because I figured this is something that I will always use no matter what. Then I took the safe route and worked in corporate for about 5 to 7 years. My mind was always on starting my own business so behind the scenes… My very last two years in corporate… I worked on my brand. I knew I was going to do it but just like a lot of people I was scared to take that risk.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
We are proud to be a minority-owned plant business. It took us a lot to get here. Being a business owner is already a lot, but when you are a minority, it’s added pressure. You don’t want to look good for your self- but also your community. You are a representation of your people, which is a tremendous honor.
We worked our butts off to get where we are- and continue to do so. We still do. It’s constantly searching for what is next and ensuring your brand is known. We have had many late nights of product-making and brainstorming. It isn’t easy, but we wouldn’t go back even if we could.
Every day is a new challenge, but what we do to try and overcome it is working with other small businesses. They may know something that we do not know and vice verse. We learned that other business are not your competition- even of you have similar product there is something unique about each of you. You may need to lean on these similar businesses in hard times. Keep them close.
our brand is not just about plants, it’s really about catering to your self. Self-care and mental health is very important to us, our store is meant to be a safe haven for everyone and we want you to know that we are here for you as well. we were built on a dream, community, and love. This is what we want to bring to other people. We want them to know that they are a part of The Brown Thumb family. in the near future we have the hopes of giving back to the community. What you give is what you receive. we have been given so much… Even if it may not seem like a lot to other businesses because we are still pretty small it’s so much to us and we are so grateful. We love The Brown Thumb Community.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
