We had the good fortune of connecting with Mark Murphy and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mark, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I have always enjoyed performing. Something about showing the world what I am capable of and getting out to see all there is to see has been something I was interested in since I was very young. When I spent my first summer working as a renaissance performer, I got a taste of what that was like, and I loved it. I had some setbacks over time and life didn’t always let it work out when it was just a hobby, so finally one day I decided I was just going to start my own business as a ren faire performer and go for it.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
What keeps me the most busy is the constant traveling. Picking up your life and then moving every two months at a time gets utterly exhausting. I love being able to see so many different parts of the country, but it’s a ton of driving and so much back and forth between places. It feels like every time I finally get settled in, it’s only a week or two before I have to pack up and head out again.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
This is a hard question to answer because I travel so much, I don’t always get to be super familiar with the niche spots in each city. That said, if there is ever a time I’m not working at a renaissance festival, I would definitely take a friend to see one nearby!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to give a shoutout to my friends at the Colorado Renaissance Festival. They opened their arms to me and showed me what kind of people and family I could make in this line of work, and I wouldn’t be here without them.
