Meet Brian W. Smith | Best-selling Author & Screenwriter

We had the good fortune of connecting with Brian W. Smith and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brian W., what is the most important factor behind your success?
The most important factor(s) to my success are:
– My faith. I pray delay and rely on my faith to get me through the ebbs and flows of entrepreneurship.
– My constantly studying my craft and industry. Becoming a subject matter expert in your craft and industry will show in your performance and your presentations. The more you know, the better you show.
– My work ethic. As an entrepreneur, you must be prepared to work as if you don’t have a Plan B.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My educational background includes an MBA. One of the first lessons I learned in graduate school was to create a lane if you don’t see one. So, that’s what I did. My company The Script Repository (TSR) has few competitors that I know of. The company specializes in adapting novels to screenplays in 90 days. I’ve been a published author for 18 years. During my literary career, I’ve spoken to dozens of authors who would love to see their novels turned into movies, but they lack the skills to write a screenplay. I am fortunate to have the ability to write screenplays. While adapting one of my own novels to a screenplay it dawned on me that I could provide this service for other authors.
In 2021, I opened The Script Repository, After 18 months business, I’ve adapted 22 novels to screenplays for authors in genres ranging from: Suspense, Mystery, Sci-fi, Christian Fiction, and others. Our client list include: NY Times Best-selling Authors, USA Today Best-selling Authors, and Amazon Best-selling Authors. Five TSR clients have already had their screenplays optioned by producers to become movies.
My two biggest challenges were: finding clients and time management. I solved the “client” problem by being willing to work longer hours to find clients and providing my current clients with more service than they paid for. Satisfied clients, tell their friends about your service. Word-of-mouth is still the best form of advertisement. The “time management” problem was solved by creating an excel spreadsheet that charted start and finish dates of projects. That visual representation of my client list really helped me corral my actions and forced me to work smarter.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
When my best friend came to Dallas, Texas, I took him to my favorite seafood restaurants (Copelands, Pappadeaux, and Razzoos). As far as recreational things to do. Depending on a person’s taste, there are lots of places to go. If the person is into history, the Dallas Book Depository (Dealey Plaza), the place where Lee Harvey Oswald hid and shot President John F. Kennedy, is a fascinating place to visit. If outdoor recreation is what you want, Six Flags or Great Wolf Lodge are cool places too.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
It’s impossible to shout-out everyone who has helped throughout my 18 year career. Honestly, I try to avoid the public shout-outs because there are always people who have helped in some way that I inadvertently leave out. However, I will shout-out God. It is because of my faith and belief in prayer that I know the people I’ve met and the opportunities that have been presented to me are all the byproduct of my lord and savior Jesus Christ.
