We had the good fortune of connecting with Steve White and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Steve, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
A few years into our marriage my wife and I got a puppy, Trout. It revealed to me that I had zero flexibility in my work and ultimately prompted me to start making a change in my work life balance. I knew when we started a family I wanted to be present and available to pivot as things came up.

Now, with a toddler and both of us working full time the idea of “balance” has shifted even further for us. Maybe during our best weeks when all things are going smoothly we have “balance” but that’s pretty rare. It has now become “juggling” where the goal deciding which thing can drop and not break versus the “glass balls” that can’t.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Running is a phenomenal sport. It changed my life and I have countless stories from patients and friends that would tell you the same thing. I remember my first race and the rush of pushing myself and re-defining my limits. It’s can be nerve-racking, empowering, and of course downright fun. Not to mention the massive health benefits you get from running even if you aren’t into racing. Unfortunately the injury rates for runners are high, roughly 80% of runners will deal with an injury each year that sidelines them. I saw a need for a running specific physical therapy practice in DFW.

My vision in my work is simple, help injured runners get back to running, training and racing. There are certainly challenges along the way as each situation is nuanced and complex, but the way forward is always there. As time went on I realized helping runners with injuries was only part of the equation, what if I could help them train in a way that creates sustainable healthy patterns that affords long term success. That’s when I started coaching runners as well that are not currently dealing with injuries. That’s what is really unique about what I do. I can take someone from the “valley” of an injury with physical therapy, to the “peak” of a new personal record via my coaching services. Ultimately those journeys are what I am most proud of and excited about participating in each day.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
One of the other great things about running is the ability to explore a city. If a friend came to town a visit to White Rock lake or Katy trail for a run would certainly be on the list. Certain corners of White rock have spectacular views of downtown Dallas. Also not to miss would be post run pastries at The Village Bakery off of the Katy Trail.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Two physical therapist have been really influential in my path so far. Chris Johnson and Nathan Carlson. If you are at all interested in the running space these two are your first stop.
