We had the good fortune of connecting with Heidi Scheurmann and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Heidi, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I have been baking professionally for over 20 years and decorating cakes for over 15 years. My baking and decorating career began in an upscale grocery store bakery and eventually transitioned to a small bake shop specializing in custom wedding and specialty cakes. I had always worked for someone else. After years of feeling overworked and under appreciated, I decided it was time for a change.
I always give 100% when it comes to my work because I am not wired to provide anything less. When working for other bakery businesses, I was overloaded in the amount of work I was given and I felt that my quality of work was suffering. To them it was more about quantity and less about quality. I didn’t have a say in the workload that was given to me so it did not matter if I had to come in early or stay really late to get the work done. This was what was expected of me and of course I complied. Over the years, I had missed so many family gatherings, outings with friends and holidays due to my crazy work schedule. I was exhausted and I was losing my passion for baking.
Starting Get Baked Bakery has allowed me freedoms I never thought I would have again. I have the ability to make my own schedule. Family gatherings are no longer missed, holidays are enjoyable again and I have more opportunities to spend time with friends. Everything I make and create is my decision therefore allowing me to have control over my workload. I know exactly what I am capable of and know when to say no. I take a lot of pride in my work and constantly strive to exceed the expectations of each and every customer. Get Baked Bakery is my business and my hard work but it is also my reputation. I will always give 100% because my customers do not deserve anything less.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
You’ll trip on deliciousness! Get Baked is a home-based bakery business operating under Texas Cottage Law. I specialize in custom wedding and event cakes, cupcakes, cookies – both decorated and drop, pies and many other specialty desserts. I also offer a variety of sweet and savory breads.
What sets me apart from others is my caring nature and attention to detail. You will not find anyone else who takes as much pride in their work as I do. Get Baked is my livelihood and with every order I am putting my reputation on the line. Customers come to me with a specific dessert vision and my passion for baking and decorating helps to make those visions a reality. Not only do I create desserts that look spectacular, they taste even better.
Get Baked Bakery is a one woman show and I am that woman. No matter what your budget is, every customer deserves to have the perfect dessert. Let me create something fabulous for your next event and I promise you’ll definitely trip on deliciousness!!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Oh where to begin…. There are so many amazing restaurants, museums, theaters and other attractions. Since I’m a Fort Worth gal, we would definitely start in Cowtown. A tour of the Stockyards, a visit to the National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame or the Modern Art Museum, a little shopping around Sundance Square, and throw in a tour to the Rahr & Sons Brewing Company or Panther Island Brewing. The Fort Worth Zoo is always a fun afternoon outing as well. Of course we can’t forget about all of the spectacular places to dine! Breakfast at The Biscuit Bar, a trip to Heim Barbeque on the River, or a burger from Rodeo Goat, dinner at Bonnell’s Fine Texas Cuisaine or one of my personal favorites, Reata Restaurant in downtown.
We would also spend a few days in Dallas to check out the Perot Museum and the Nasher Sculpture Center. Spending the afternoons in Klyde Warren Park and the Dallas Farmer’s Market. Evenings spent in Deep Ellum or in Uptown enjoying the nightlife. Lunches at Revolver Taco Lounge, Thunderbird Pies or Mercat Bistro with dinners at places like Lucia or Knife Dallas.
I’m sure most would agree one week isn’t enough time to showcase all of the great places DFW has to offer!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My husband and my family have always been my biggest fans. Their support and encouragement helped me become the success I am today. Without their loving persistence, I would not have taken the leap of faith that lead me to becoming a business owner and being my own boss.
Out of everyone, my grandmother deserves the credit for sparking my passion for baking. I spent a lot of time with my grandmother growing up and spent much of that time in the kitchen with her. She taught me the basics of baking and shared many of her favorite recipes. Food influences fond memories of family and friends and I will never forget those special moments spent in the kitchen with my grandmother.
