We had the good fortune of connecting with Justina Hubbard-Tate and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Justina, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Initially it started as a hobby just something I would do for my family reunion after the passing of my cousin. Then it became something I really enjoyed doing and had a passion to do. I didn’t want to start a business just out of enjoyment but wanted to walk in my purpose. So after praying and seeking God for guidance, I started my Design and Service company.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Jay Tate Multi-Purpose Services (JTMPS) is a Design and service company. Faith is our foundation and each product or service we do it with love. Purposefully servicing businesses and personal needs including graphics and publications. I am also a Mary Kay Consultant purposely empowering the lives of women and their families. We are branching out to include Live stream producing as I am the head of Audio and video department of my church and I am an executive Producer of TateFlight which broadcasts live on Facebook and YouTube. Notary will also be a service offered soon.
I am proud of my ability to step out and display my company. I am excited about the ability to keep growing and learning new things and working on new programs to take my business to the next level. I love being able to help small businesses and point them in the directions of others when it’s outside of my business scope.
I started off just using MS publisher to design my flyers and publications. At the time I was going to college to be a biomedical Engineer. While working with my cousin Jason on our family Reunion, I realized my love for computers and graphics. I changed my major to Computer Science and never looked back. It was not easy, I relied on word of mouth because I was intimated and felt like my work was not good enough. I continued to and I am continuing to work on my craft and business skills to make my company better than ever. I am still working a full time Job while working my business part-time. Handling both is not easy some days but I have learned to plan and prioritize.
Lessons I have learned along the way are to have a to-do list, Practice, Study your craft to improve your skills (leadership, design, etc…), Never give up, challenge is good for your growth, and that Faith is the key that unlocks doors.
What I want the world to know about me is that I am nobody trying to tell everybody about somebody who can save anybody (The Williams Brothers – I’m Just a Nobody). I am a wife, Mother, educated with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from Wayne State University and a Masters in Analytics, Technology, and Innovation from Cleary University. I am a member of The National Society of Leadership and Success (NSLS). Just because there are thousands of other companies that are doing exactly what you are doing, don’t be discouraged and Just do IT. Everyone is not meant for everyone but there are people waiting on you! step out on Faith and Watch God.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would take my Best friend to Downtown Detroit to visit Campus Martius Park and The Monroe Street Midway. One of the days we would walk the Detroit RiverWalk. It’s peaceful and gets a great scenic view over Canada.
Would definitely make a stop at the Skating Rink Friday Evening from 10-1Am at Northland Roller rink.
Another stop would be The Motown Museum, Hitsville, USA, The birthplace of Motown Sound.
Saturday Morning is the day to visit the Eastern Market, It is like a one stop shop. You can get your fresh meats, Visit the sheds for fresh farm raised vegetables, buy your flowers, hear great live music and get something great to eat. Eastern Market is live in the day and at night.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to dedicate my Shoutout to my Cousin Jason Gardner as he planted the seed in me. Before his passing he took the time to show me how to use certain graphic applications. Without that I can’t say I would be doing this kind of work. I want to recognize Detroit Rhythmic Rollers (DRR) as they have supported and encouraged me from the very beginning giving me opportunities to design for them. My Family has truly been supportive, loving and giving me the motivation to push and move forward to bigger and better things.
