We had the good fortune of connecting with Jordan Filloon and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jordan, what’s one piece of conventional advice that you disagree with?
That you have to have all your ducks in a row and be financially free to make it happen. I call b***s**t! Wake up everyday, stay focused, WIIING IIIT and do whatever you gotta do to get to that next level. If you wait till the perfect time you will be waiting FOR-EV-ER. (Definite Sandlot reference there for you.)

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I became a hairdresser at 20 years old because I was a single mom of a two year old and I needed to take the fastest route to the most amount of money. Turns out I absolutely fell in love with hairdressing and following that path was the best decision I ever made. I think what sets me apart is my focus on customer service and creating a pleasant experience for my clients. Of course you’re going to get an amazing haircut and color — but I believe the reason many of my clients have been coming back for 20 years is because not only do I give them great hair, but I’m genuinely interested in them and their lives.

I got to where I am today by being consistent and professional and never taking no for an answer. I’ve worked for myself since I was 23 years old and I wouldn’t have it any other way. There is nothing like doing what you want, when you want, with whom you want. But it definitely wasn’t always easy. There were days in my 20s I would sit in my apartment and wonder if anyone would call to get their hair done that week so I could pay my bills and feed my kids, but somehow the universe always made a way. I think the key is staying positive and taking action when you’re in a rough patch of your life. It’s not always the easiest task and it’s totally clichè, but it’s worth persevering when things work out in the end.

Along the way one of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that sometimes you just have to make your own way. You don’t always have to do things the conventional way or the way people think you should do them. I opened my salon in 2019 basically on a whim. I was living on the East Coast for about a year at the time and the building just fell in my lap. Six weeks later I was back in Dallas renovating an old Victorian building and turning it into one of the most eclectic salon suites in the city. (I believe my mom had a lot to do with that but that’s a whole other story!)

My advice to any young entrepreneur would be DO IT SCARED. Do it broke. Follow your gut. Make it happen. Stay focused and keep moving forward.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Oh man, where do we even begin? This is really a question for my sister. She was the editor of Eater Dallas for several years so she knows all the best spots — sometimes I think she knows what I like more than I know what I like! But I love starting out a night at the Joule, and Fuel City is always a must for late-night tacos. Kenny’s in Addison has been one of our go-to spots for over a decade, the crab cakes never fail. North Park mall for brunch and retail therapy and if that doesn’t do it for you we have about ten other malls to choose from. And depending on the season, Cowboys and Mavs games are a must. Eating and drinking your way through Dallas is definitely the way to go!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Mostly I’d like to thank me for believing in me (kidding, but seriously!). I’d have to say my mom — she’s hands down the reason I’m able to do what I do. We lost her to cancer 3 and a half years ago but she still motivates me daily. I learned the art of Feng shui from her, got my green thumb from her, she taught me how to thrift shop like a pro, and I even got my love of doing hair from her. She was a hair stylist in the 80’s so I was lucky enough to be a salon kid and be surrounded by creative, wild, independent feminist women for as long as I can remember. Probably why I’m such a non-conformist now. Thanks mom! You’re the real MVP!
