We had the good fortune of connecting with Kelli Talley and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kelli, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I’ve never worked in corporate and never truly had the desire to. Coming out of college I knew I wanted to be a wardrobe stylist I just had no clue how to go about starting a career that was so off the beaten path, because there was no play book. That journey gave me the confidence to start Jean Josephine. I realized that what makes me happy is in part helping others to find their happiness. I knew I wanted my own fashion boutique and with my background in mental health advocacy and everything that was happening to black men in 2020, the launch of Jean Josephine came together in 2021.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
As a woman servicing men is a challenge. I have spoken with and continue to speak with lots of men just to get a better understanding of them and to get a better idea of their needs. The store isn’t just a store but a place to nurture and facilitate the self care and self expression of men of color. I’m really excited about bringing new brands and products into the store that will help men in all aspects of their healing process and wellness journeys.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
When visiting Dallas my first stop on a weekend would be the Dallas farmers market! You never know what goodies you might find and who you might meet. During the fall the rodeos are always a good look and a pretty cool tradition of Texas. There are endless places to eat. Dallas has some of the best barbecue and also some of the best tacos I’ve ever had but if you are a vegetarian things can get a bit more tricky. I would recommend Invasion because they have something tasty for everyone. On a Sunday morning you can check out the Potters House for a good sermon to start your week and head to brucnch at brunchaholics after.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
The brands in my store were my first yes. They are all amazing and part of my vision to service men of color. The black men in my life and even in my past, as well as the men I have recently met that support and encourage my journey have played a big part in the unfolding journey of Jean Josephine.
