We had the good fortune of connecting with Brooke Mooty and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brooke, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
My role within our company has grown over time, and I took over administration when my mom retired last year. It has given me whole new respect for how she juggled everything! I jumped in feet-first and had to pull back a bit and set some boundaries for my mental space because I had no boundaries and I was getting burned out. Because we have group homes for adults in the intellectually and developmentally disabled community, and there is no time that our business closes, work-life balance is my biggest hurdle. When you work in a family business, your whole life is your business! Whether it’s discussing things at family dinner on Sunday, taking calls at all hours of the day and night, to bouncing ideas off my mom and sister, work is always on the brain. I try to stay off my work email in the evenings and spend time with my husband and kids without interruption. I have also learned that I don’t have to respond to every text and call immediately. Take a breath and wait until Monday! Being surrounded by fantastic employees who take care of our clients 24/7 is the most critical piece of the puzzle.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My parents bought Safe Care over 20 years ago, so it has been in our family for a long time. I worked small jobs in the organization after high school but went on to get a degree in Fashion Merchandising from Texas Woman’s University. I never intended to go into the family business! After the birth of my oldest son, I came to work with my mom because it offered flexibility so I could spend time with my little one. Over the last 12 years, I have done a little bit of everything at Safe Care! From filing paperwork to taking clients to doctor appointments, to planning Christmas parties, and every little detail in between. When my mom decided to retire earlier this year, it just made sense for me to step into the role of administrator. I feel like I’m uniquely suited for this role because everything about this company is deeply personal to me! The health of the clients, employees, and business is my obsession.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
The Fort Worth scene has so much to offer right now! I’d start out by heading over to South Main to do some shopping for unique Fort Worth goodies at Morgan Mercantile. Head next door for a cocktail and snack at the gorgeous rooftop at Tinies. A trip to SoMa wouldn’t be complete without hitting Brix BBQ for the best brisket and an ice-cold Big Red. Over in the museum district, I would take them to the Modern to check out the latest exhibit and refuel across the street at Salsa Limon. My husband would insist that we go a little further down University and get a craft beer and giant pretzel at Bankhead Brewing. For a chic night out, I would take them for a stay at the boutique Hotel Dryce across from Dickies Arena. Working our way westward on Camp Bowie, we gotta grab a pizza from the new plant-based pizzeria Pizza Verde and get vegan chips and queso from Mariachis! Archie’s Gardenland is a Fort Worth staple that has the most incredible selection of plants and is just a relaxing place to stroll through. We would get some caffeine at my favorite local coffee shop, Lazy Daisy, before hitting my beloved Trinity Trails for some sunshine and people-watching. I would wrap up their tour of my city with drinks and apps on the patio at Wild Acre Brewing, which is just down the street from my house so we are sure to see a lot of neighborhood friends and families!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My Shoutout is dedicated to our Direct Care Professionals who care for our clients day in and day out. Particularly over the pandemic, when outside activities were restricted, families couldn’t visit, and staffing shortages were the norm. They love and care for our clients like their own families. They’re truly the backbone of our entire organization and I’m inspired by their dedication, grit, and tenacity every single day.
