We had the good fortune of connecting with Michael Starr and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Michael, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I felt like I had a BBQ sauce that was different than anything on the market. Most sauces are more of a regional style, but my original BBQ sauce was more multicultural. I wasn’t sure where it would go, but I knew I needed to give it a try.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I was in the US Air Force for 21 years and I traveled all over the world experiencing unique cultures and tasting unique food. Blazing Star BBQ is bringing unique flavors from my world travels to your backyard. The key with all businesses is bringing something different to the table, something that really can separate you from everyone else. I leveraged social media to help me build my brand, mostly on Instagram and TikTok. I had to make myself a content creator because I couldn’t afford to pay someone for it. I networked and surrounded myself around other people in the industry with positive vibes. We are not just creating a brand, we are creating an experience like no other. We have 3 sauces and 5 seasonings that are packed full of flavors, and we have only just begun.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Honestly I would pack a cooler full food and take them out to a campsite. Nothing like cooking food over a campfire and sharing stories. Things are too hectic in this world today and sometimes we just need a taste of the simple life.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
In the early stages of my business growth I needed to find a copacker to help me mass produce my products. I struggled finding one during the pandemic and that is when Brad Orrison from The Shed BBQ and The Saucery reached out to me. Not only did he help me with this process, he and his sister Brooke Lewis really took me under their wing. They made connections for me in the industry that I would have probably never made on my own in a short period of time.
