Meet Danielle Marshman-Hall | Hairstylist & Product educator

We had the good fortune of connecting with Danielle Marshman-Hall and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Danielle, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
A lot of people are afraid to take risks. As a hairstylist, once you graduate from school you don’t necessarily start making money right away. There are options like Great Clips and Supercuts where you can make an hourly wage and tips. If working in the salon is what you want to do, it is a huge risk to start booth renting fresh out of Cosmetology school.
I always had a regular paycheck job that I worked part time along with working several days a week in a hair salon. Finally one day I took the risk and went full time at the salon. I was all in. To my surprise I became busier and had no problem paying my salon rent and purchasing supplies, as well as making enough money to pay my bills.
We have to take risks in life. If we are too scared and play it safe throughout life, we are doing ourselves a disservice. I feel that a back up plan is a great thing to have in mind, but life without risk is not a fulfilling life. I always think of a worst case scenario. Once I have that in mind, I know exactly where I won’t allow myself to go. That is where my plan B would kick in if I needed it. I can honestly say I have never needed a plan B.
When you jump off the life boat and are forced to swim, you end up swimming. That is how I view risk.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I have been a hairstylist for nearly 20 years. Due to my struggles with addiction, I was not successful until the last 5 years. I have invested money and time in to my business to educate myself and learn new techniques. I have also taken business classes specifically geared towards hairstylists’ needs and business models. I have continued to educate myself in school as well, by obtaining my AA degree in behavioral and social sciences. I am currently finishing out my bachelors degree.
18 months ago I partnered with an anti-aging vegan hair and skin care line. The time I have invested in learning the science behind the products, social media promotion and navigating social platforms, as well as the free trainings and support I continuously get from the company, has been what has sky-rocketed my hairstyling business in the last few years.
There are so many highs and lows as an entrepreneur. You have to continually network with others and put yourself out there. These days, social media platforms are so important. By putting myself out there daily, people not only recognize me, but they also feel like they know me. I put my real life out there, and it is scary because that does make me vulnerable. I would rather be vulnerable with my experiences and be open for people to relate to me, then be fake and show people what I think they want to see.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I have only been to Dallas a few times. I loved all the food places downtown. I love all the Diners Drive-ins & Dives places. The barbecue is THE BEST!!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I will be honest with ya’ll. I have struggled with addiction throughout my life. I have 9 years clean & sober. I have to give my shoutout to my family who has never given up on me. They have cheered me on when I was coming out of my dark years. The 12 steps through AA and NA have helped me beyond measure. Mentors, friends, and a community of women have helped me to see the true value in myself.
John Maxwell and his readings have also helped me in my Network Marketing career. He has helped me to see the value in myself so I can add value to others.
