Meet Rebecca Lowrey: Director & Vocal Coach

We had the good fortune of connecting with Rebecca Lowrey and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Rebecca, do you have any habits that you feel contribute to your effectiveness?

Organization: I cannot work in or around clutter. I keep my living and work spaces neat and tidy. Unlike most pianists, I can’t stand it when my piano is covered in books or equipment. To-do lists are my lifeline. There is nothing more satisfying than crossing items off a list – be it pen/paper – or clicking a digital checkbox.

Creation: I am constantly creating opportunities – for myself – and colleagues/clients. When you are not landing the jobs or work you desire – create it. Some closed doors have definitely led me to create projects that have been more fun and rewarding than the gig I was aiming for in the first place.

Tenacity: Defined as “persistent determination”. There isn’t much that is able to stop me from meeting or exceeding my goals. If you are truly passionate about your art – your product – your coaching or classes – nothing will stand in your way. I wake up every morning seeking ways I can transfer this enthusiasm to clients and customers.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.

Pre-pandemic, I had the opportunity to cast dozens of musicals in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, and had been the music director for even more. All those years behind the piano and in the audition room have given me a unique insight into what successful performers do — and others do not —that results in getting cast. What began as just helping a few friends prepare for an upcoming audition in exchange for a bottle of wine turned into over 350 unique clients in 2019. My goal with every performer is to best help them banish audition jitters. How do we do that? By being prepared and confident. Our sessions usually end up 50% singing/acting and 50% counseling session. I can determine exactly what they need to show in an audition – and how to get out of their own way – so that all they have to worry about is looking great (and fighting traffic). Covid definitely pulled the rug out from under me (and all theatres/performers). I went from a calendar chock full of concerts – shows – auditions – master classes – to nothing. Empty. Everything cancelled or postponed indefinitely. I definitely grieved for a time – but have managed to translate my coaching into online group classes and performance opportunities. And yes, I even found my way to TikTok, and hit that 10k follower benchmark. Is it the same? No. Am I sick of Zoom? Yes. Do I miss sitting in traffic criss-crossing the metroplex everyday? No. Do I miss audiences and applause? Yes. But performers are resilient – we have to be. Our business has and always will be about handling rejection. There are 100 “NO” to every singular “YES”. I can’t wait to collaborate and work with singers again. I can’t wait to be back in front of a room full of eager highschool theatre kids. But I am so thankful to be able to continue to connect with singers and actors all over the WORLD – thanks to technology and social media!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Oh gosh – I love food. Here are my favorite restaurants in DFW – Cane Rosso, Whiskey Cake, Torchy’s (queso and guac, please), Winslow’s on Camp Bowie, TacoHeads. I’m happy on ANY patio with margaritas or any rooftop with happy hour apps and wine! Pre-Covid, I used to play at Alexandre’s on Tuesday Nights for Broadway on a Tuesday with Kim Oliver. There is so much great theatre in and around DFW: Imprint Theatreworks, Uptown Players, Stomping Ground Comedy, Amphibian Stage in FW, outdoor concerts at the Levitt in Arlington and more! For a day of relaxation – you can find me at the Four Seasons Spa in Las Colinas – or a quick stop to see Shayna Tomlinson at Aglow Beauty Bar in Fort Worth for brows and more!

Julie Romeo – president and owner of Romeo Music – I’ve had the privilege to work for Julie for almost 16 years. She is a generous boss, an ethical business owner and the hardest worker you’ve ever seen. She definitely inspires me!
