We had the good fortune of connecting with Allison Vanderwoude and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Allison, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
Passion and People. My passion for entertainment news has been around since a young age. As a child, I loved flipping through the pages of my mom’s People magazines. As I got older, I loved watching news shows like Extra, E! News, Access Hollywood or the late night talk shows. I was always camped out in front of the TV on Oscars Sunday to check out all the fashion and see if my favorites won. So in terms of VandyPop becoming successful, I think it’s driven by my passion for entertainment news and my love of sharing it with others. Whether it’s breaking news, red carpet fashion, or a who’s-dating-who in Hollywood, I strive to share content that’s interesting and engaging to others. And the second part to my answer is people – specifically my awesome followers! They are hugely responsible for the success of VandyPop. They are active, engaged, and fun, and they have been great about spreading the word to others. The word-of-mouth marketing, combined with their account engagement, has been incredible. I am so grateful to everyone who has supported VandyPop the past 3 years!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
VandyPop is an entertainment news platform on Instagram that provides a daily dose of pop culture “with an emphasis on TV, movies, music, Hollywood, celebrities, and royals.” Why VandyPop? Well, “Vandy” is a longtime nickname of mine, and I have a huge passion for pop culture and all things entertainment, so why not share the love?! At the urging of friends and family, I launched VandyPop in 2019 from my iPhone while lying in bed. Today, it has more than 20,000 followers and serves as a one-stop shop for entertainment junkies to get a daily fix of pop culture!

What some people may not know is VandyPop is a hobby and passion project for me. It is not my full-time job but something I do in my spare time. By day, I enjoy making a difference in the lives of others through my work as a non-profit fundraiser. I am a Sr. Development Director for one of the oldest independent schools in Dallas and enjoy raising funds to support the school’s mission as well as its operational and capital needs.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
For a hotel, I would recommend staying at The Mansion on Turtle Creek—it’s absolutely fabulous and centrally located near lots of great places and activities! For a more budget-friendly option, I would check out the Hotel Lumen or Park Cities Hilton. For food, my top recommendations are Mi Cocina or Bird Bakery in Highland Park Village, Le Bilboquet or Javier’s near Knox-Henderson, R+D Kitchen or il Bracco in The Plaza at Preston Center, or Beverley’s in uptown. For shopping, my favorite shopping centers are Highland Park Village, The Plaza at Preston Center, Snider Plaza, and the incredible NorthPark Center. The Katy Trail and White Rock Lake are great places to get out for some exercise. And there are no shortage of interesting museums or great sports teams in Dallas! So no matter what your hobbies are, you can find something fun to do in this awesome city!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to dedicate this shoutout to my awesome fan base! VandyPop reached 20,000 followers at the end of 2021, and in February 2022, we celebrated our 3-year anniversary! Anyone who has started something from scratch knows it takes time to define your audience, develop a fan base, and find your niche. After all, there is no shortage of news outlets to follow! So I’d like to give a shoutout to all the great people who helped shape VandyPop into what it is today. When I curate entertainment news to share, my hope is that readers find something fun and interesting to read and that it will create a further conversation. I want to share stories that spark conversation… Ex: “Oh my gosh, did you hear that Prince Harry was at the Fort Worth Rodeo?” “Did you see this gorgeous dress that Jessica Chastain wore to the Oscars last night?” “Honey, this is a new Netflix series we need to binge.” I am beyond grateful when I see this occurring online and my hope is that the dialogue it is happening offline too…at soccer games and around the dinner table!
